WAILUKU -The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) reopens vehicle access on the Kula State Forest Reserve Access Road this afternoon.  The road was closed near the cement crossing to Polipoli State Park a week ago following heavy rains that resulted in unsafe conditions.  DLNR officials say milder weather in recent days allowed the road to dry enough for forestry crews to access the area to remove dirt and fix washed-out areas.  Although fixed, conditions are still muddy and access remains restricted to four-wheel drive vehicles only beginning at 3:30 this afternoon.

“We thank the Maui community for their patience and understanding that this closure was in the interest of public safety due to the road condition,” said Laura H. Thielen, DLNR chairperson.

The road opening means that access is now restored to Polipoli Spring State Recreation Area within the Kula Forest Reserve.
