A council committee will examine economic concerns, challenges, and recommendations at a meeting next week.  Councilmember Jo Anne Johnson of West Maui, who chairs the committee on Economic Development, Agriculture and Recreation said that although the county has limited resources, it must take an active role in efforts to stabilize the economy.

“As the economic recession deepens,” Johnson said, “the county needs to open lines of communication and partner with nonprofit organizations and private businesses to stabilize our economy.”

A number of resource organizations and agencies have been invited to attend. Among those invited are:  the County’s Economic Development Coordinator, Office of Economic Development; Carole Kooy, Chairperson of the Boar of Directors, Maui Chamber of Commerce; Jacqueline Haraguchi, Executive Director, Maui Contractors Association; Susie Thieman, CEO, Business Development Corporation, Maui Economic Opportunity, Inc.; Terryl Vencl, Executive Director, Maui Visitors Bureau; and Stephen West, Division Representative, International Longshore and Warehouse Union.
