MAUI’S CORPORATION COUNSEL MOTO HONORED WITH STATE AWARD

Maui Corporation Council Brian T. Moto was honored this week with an award from the Hawaii State Bar Association, Government Lawyer’s Section.Moto on Monday recived the inaugural 2008 Pro Bono Service Award for providing legal services free of charge to those in need, and for his leadership in a number of community organizations.

In recognition of his prestigious award, Moto was presented with a plaque by Retiring Supreme Court Justice Steven Levinson at the Hawaii Supreme Court in Honolulu.

Commenting on his award, Mayor Charmaine Tavares noted Moto’s dedication as a “champion of the people, upholding the principles of justice, equality and fairness for all members of the community.” At a recent cabinet meeting, Mayor Tavares presented Moto with a framed commendation and expressed her gratitude for his efforts to provide pro bono services for those who cannot afford legal help. “His leadership and commitment are exemplified in his long-standing support of many local organizations,” she said.

David A. Pendleton, GLS Chair and member of the Labor Appeals Board, remarked that Moto is an inspiration to lawyers throughout the State of Hawaii. “He reminds us all that the practice of law is not just about trying cases in court or drafting contracts,” Pendleton said.

“It’s about doing what’s right, seeking justice, making a contribution, and helping those who are in need. Brian is a credit to the legal profession and a person who exudes the aloha spirit.”

Moto has practiced law since 1986, and serves in various leadership capacities with the Friends of the Children’s Justice Center, the Maui Historical Society, the Nisei Veterans Memorial Center, Maui AJA Veterans, Inc., St. John’s Episcopal Church, Mantokuji Soto Mission of Paia and condominium association AOAO of the Gardens Upcountry.
