Thousands of gallons of wastewater overflowed during the construction of a new Kaanapali force main on Wednesday.   The spill was reported at 11:35 a.m. and was stopped immediately.  Approximately 1,500 gallons of the 10,600 gallons of wastewater flowed from the discharge piping, but the water did not enter the ocean.

Officials with the County of Maui Department of Environmental Management say the overflow occurred when a discharge hose separated from a bypass pump during the construction of the new Kaanapali forcemain.

Standing water was removed and the spill site was disinfected.  The Department of Health was notified and signs were posted.
