Polipoli Without Water Following Kula Waterline Break

November 29th, 2009 by MauiNOW staff

The Polipoli area of Kula will be without water today as personnel with the Department of Water Supply repair a broken transmission line.  The affected area includes Polipoli Road between the Pilikino Gulch and the intersection with Middle Road, and Pilikino Place.

Water will be shut off from 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Sunday, November 29, 2009.  A portable water tanker will be stationed at the DWS Waiohuli Tank site for customers to fill up their own containers with potable water.

Kula customers beyond the Polipoli area, including Waiohuli, Ulupalakua, and Kanaio are asked to conserve water since the transmission line will be out of service and the Department will not be able to fill storage tanks until the repair job is completed.

Customers are asked to call the service line at 270-7633, only if a water emergency occurs.

Gonzaga beats Cincinnati in OT thriller

November 27th, 2009 by mauirican

MauiNow.com

Based on the lofty standards of an event billed as the nation’s premier pre-season college basketball tournament, this hardly qualified as the most impressive field for a recent EA Sports Maui Invitational.

There were only two ranked teams coming into the event, No. 21 Maryland and No. 24 Vanderbilt. But indicative of just how competitive this field truly was, consider that neither the Terrapins nor the Commodores, reached the final, each an upset victim of Cincinnati..

The Bearcats took on the early roll of giant-killer, knocking off Vanderbilt 67-58 in Monday’s opening day and followed that up with a dominating 69-57 victory over Maryland.

But Cincinnati’s bid for the title fell short as Gonzaga pulled out a 61-59 victory before a national television audience and an overflow crowd at the Lahaina Civic Center.

Sharing MVP honors were Gonzaga’s Steven Gray and Matt Bouldin. Also named to the all-tournament team were Cincinnati’s Yancy Gates and Deonte Vaughn, Wisconsin’s Trevor Hughes and Arizona’s Nic Wise.

In Wednesday’s other final round of games, Wisconsin stunned Maryland 78-69 for third place, Vanderbilt topped Arizona 84-72 for fifth and Colorado pulled away from Chaminade for a 73-58 win in the seventh-place game.

The field for next year’s tournament, set for Nov. 22-24, is filled with traditional powerhouse programs. Joining host Chaminade for the 2010 tournament will be Connecticut, Kentucky, Michigan State, Oklahoma, Virginia, Washington, and Wichita State.

As a point of reference, five of those teams are currently ranked among the nation’s Top 25: No. 2 Michigan State, No. 5 Kentucky, No. 13 Connecticut, No. 14 Washington, and No. 25 Oklahoma.

In other words, just your typical star-studded cast for the next edition of the EA Sports Maui Invitational.

State to Expand Artificial Reef at Keawakapu on Maui

November 25th, 2009 by MauiNOW staff

The state will be adding 1,500 concrete modules to Keawakapu Beach on Monday in an effort to expand an artificial reef located about a half mile offshore.

The public is asked to stay clear of the area as crews from the Department of Land and Natural Resources work to deploy the “Z” modules beginning at 9 a.m. Monday, November 30, 2009. The public will not be able to dive or fish on the artificial reef until the deployment is complete. DLNR Aquatics crews advise the public to say at least 300 yards away from the deployment site.

Keawakapu Artificial Reef was created in 1962. It is approximately 52 acres in size, and consists of 150 cars, 2,250 tire modules, 35 concrete slabs, and one vessel (the “St. Anthony”) was added in 1997. This is the first addition of concrete modules since 1990 to expand the reef.

The modules, constructed from concrete by Pioneer Machinery, Inc. will be loaded onto an American Marine barge and will be deployed in 60-120 feet of water. Each “Z”-shaped form measures eight feet long by four feet wide with 12-inch legs at each end facing in opposite directions, and weighs about 2,200 pounds (1.1 tons).

Prior to and during the deployment of the “Z” forms, the target area will be marked with surface floats to warn fishermen, boaters, and divers to stay clear of the barge and the reef site, for safety reasons.

“New coral and seaweed will grow on the forms, which will provide additional habitat to new communities of reef fish,” said Laura H. Thielen, DLNR chairperson. “Artificial reefs increase potential fishing grounds for fishermen, and the cost to the State is minimal,” she said.

DLNR has four shallow water (50-100′) artificial reefs and one deepwater (300-420′) artificial reef. Three of the shallow water reefs are located off O’ahu at Wai’anae, in Maunalua Bay, and Kualoa. The fourth is located off Keawakapu on Maui. The deep water artificial reef is located off ‘Ewa Beach, O’ahu.

Numerous studies have shown that artificial reefs are effective at enhancing reef habitat, thus increasing fish biomass and species diversity within the reef site. Artificial reefs are key components in fisheries enhancement, as well as a substrate for the settlement of coral polyps (coral growth). Artificial reefs are also attractive SCUBA and snorkel dive sites.

An upset and two thrillers on Day 1

November 24th, 2009 by mauirican

By Fred Guzman
MauiNow.com

One upset and two thrillers out of four games. Just your typical opening day in the EA Sports Maui Invitational on Monday at the Lahaina Civic Center.

First, the upset:

Vanderbilt broke into the Top 25 on Sunday and promptly risked its newly-gained No. 24 ranking by suffering a 67-58 loss to an inspired Cincinnati squad that played the cold-shooting Commodores in every phase of the game.

Yancy Gates had 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Bearcats, who improved to 3-0. Jermaine Beal’s 16 points led the Commodores, who made only 27.5 percent of their shots and were out-rebounded 53-32 by Cincinnati.

Vanderbilt dropped to 2-1 and was relegated to Tuesday’s 8:30 a.m. game against tournament host Chaminade.

Cincinnati advanced into the 2 p.m. semifinal game against Maryland, which cruised to a 78-59 victory against out-manned Chaminade. Sean Mosley led the Terrapins with 19 points and eight rebounds.

Next, the thrillers:

In the opening game of the tournament, Gonzaga – which gave second-ranked Michigan State all it could handle on the road just last week – rallied from a 15-point deficit to pull out a 76-72 win over stubborn Colorado.

Steven Gray had 27 points and Matt Bouldin added 21 to offset a 19-point effort by Cory Higgins, who also had six rebounds and four assists.

Colorado and Gonzaga are now both 3-1.

Gonzaga earned a spot in the 4:30 semifinal opposite Wisconsin, which survived a furious comeback bid by Arizona for a 65-61 win.

Point guard Trevon Hughes led the way for Wisconsin, which led by 14 points 6:26 into the game. Hughes finished with 24 points, seven rebounds and three assists as the Badgers improved to 3-0.

Arizona, which didn’t make its field goal until nine minutes into the contest, got a huge boost from freshman forward Derrick Williams, who had 25 points and eight rebounds. Williams forced his way to the free throw line 21 times, converting 13 of those attempts.

Arizona and Colorado will play in the 11 a.m. consolation game.
