Lahaina man dies after being struck by two cars

A Lahaina man died after being struck by two vehicles on the Honoapiilani Highway last night.  Authorities identified the man as Rene Humberto Quijada.  The accident was reported at 8:59 p.m. just north of mile marker 23 near Wahikuli Beach Park.

Quijada was initially struck by a 2007 Suzuki sedan, and then by a 2004 Cadillac sedan.  Both vehicles were traveling south on the highway in the inner lane.

Quijada was pronounced dead at the Maui Memorial Medical Center.  The death is the 8th traffic fatality on Maui county roads this year compared to seven at the same time last year.

North and South bound traffic on the Honoapiilani Highway is now being alternated on the Mauka shoulder.

(Update: 9:46 p.m. 5/20/10) Motorists traveling in the West Maui area are advised of a Road Closure in Kaanapali.  The Honoapiilani Hwy was closed in both directions at around 9:45 p.m. following a motor vehicle accident.  The closure extends from  Leialii Parkway Road to Kaanapali Parkway Road.  Traffic investigators are on the scene.  Initially, traffic was being re-routed through Wahikuli Wayside Park, but the highway was then closed to traffic in both directions while police conduct an investigation.
