Red Cross comes to aid of Molokai family

A Molokai family is being assisted by the Red Cross tonight following a home fire in Hoolehua. County authorities say the incident was first reported at 1:30 p.m. Friday, May 21, 2010 at a 2,000 square foot home near the airport.

The blaze burned about a third of the home and caused an estimated $150,000 in damage to the structure. The fire spread to bush adjacent to the structure and burned an estimated half-acre of agricultural land.

The family was at home at the time of the incident, but no one was injured. The family did however, report the loss of a family pet bird.

Crews from all three island fire stations (Hoolehua, Kaunakakai and Pukoo) responded to the scene and extinguished the blaze by 5:30 p.m.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
