Pat Brock, 2010 candidate for Maui Mayor, Transcript:

Introduction: My name is Pat Brock and I’m running for the Hawaii 2nd Congressional District.  I live in Kihei–I’ve lived on Maui for 30 years.  I’m unmarried with no children.  I’m a pool technician and self employed. I would like to see the government return more control to the people in that government is becoming so over-bearing and there are so many laws that most people can’t keep track of them, and it’s stifling our economy.

Stimulus Funding:  Do you think stimulus funds have been put to their best use?  If given the opportunity to infuse more stimulus funds on Maui, what areas would be a priority?  Answer:  I think the stimulus program was the wrong approach.  I think that government programs cutbacks would have been appropriate, accompanied by a tax vacation, or at least deep tax cuts in order to allow the citizens to have money in their hands rather than it being dictated from Washington.

Drought:   Drought conditions in the islands continue to pose a problem for firefighters as well as farmers and ranchers in the islands.  What can be done at the federal level to support fire suppression efforts and the agricultural industry?  Answer:  I think that our local drought is a local problem and there’s not a lot that the federal government can do about it.  We have to solve our own water usage conflicts locally, and I don’t think the federal government can help a lot.

Akaka Bill:  What are your thoughts on the recently revised Akaka Bill, and do you foresee its passage in the near future?  Answer: (Pass)

Closing thoughts: I think that government at all levels is becoming increasingly intrusive in our lives and costing us a lot of money.  I believe that we need to cease the foreign wars as soon as possible–immediately in fact–and bring our troops home.  This is costing our economy a lot of money–not only in tax money–but also depriving us of the efforts of all of those troops who could be contributing to our economy at home.  I also believe that the drug war should be stopped.  It is also costing us a lot in finances, and it’s an impossible mission because people show no signs of ceasing these behaviors.
