The State Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) will present a draft management plan for ‘Ahihi-Kina‘u NAR at a meeting planned for next week Wednesday, October 20, 2010 beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Lokelani Intermediate School Cafeteria in Kihei.

“The plan contains historical, management, and biological information, describes the current status and condition of the reserve, identifies threats to the natural and cultural resources found there, and suggests actions that both welcome people and protect what is fragile and rare,” said DLNR Maui NARS specialist William Evanson.

“This plan is a call to action to protect and preserve one of Maui’s most beautiful and loved places, ‘Ahihi-Kina‘u Natural Area Reserve,” Evanson said.

Portions of the reserve have been closed since 2008 and will remain closed through at least August of 2012 to address concerns over increased resource degradation at the site.
