Pedestrian killed in Kahului accident on Kaahumanu Ave

A 49-year-old man suffered fatal injuries after being struck by a vehicle in Kahului last night (Monday, November 15, 2010).  The accident was reported at 9:48 p.m. on Kaahumanu Avenue near the Wharf Street intersection.

According to police reports, the pedestrian was struck by a 2005 Lexus 4-door sedan that was traveling west on Kaahumanu Avenue.   The pedestrian was in the roadway at the time of the accident and died of injuries after being transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center.

Authorities say the man had no known local address on Maui.  His identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The driver of the Lexus was uninjured.

Maui Police are investigating speed, drugs and alcohol as possible factors in the crash.  This was Maui County’s 12th traffic related fatality in 2010 compared to 20 at the same time last year.
