Maui County Bankruptcy Filings Up 29%

U.S. Bankruptcy Court statistics show that 2010 filings at the Hawaii District Court are up almost 29% for Maui County and 28% for Hawaii as a whole year-over-year.

Maui County saw 786 case filings in 2010, 611 in 2009, and 373 in 2008; a 29% increase since 2009, and almost 111% increase in 2 years.

Hawaii State saw 3954 case filings in 2010, 3101 in 2009, and 2077 in 2008; a 28% increase since 2009, and 90% increase in 2 years.

The last time numbers reached higher was in 2005 when 4481 cases were filed.

The last time there was a decrease in filing, and a significant one at that, was four years ago in 2006 when 955 cases were filed in Hawaii bankruptcy court; drop from 4481 the year before.

These numbers include all chapters filed: Chapter 7 and Chapter 13. Overall for 2010, 3078 Chapter 7 filings, and 853 Chapter 13 filings; or 24.1% and 42.4% increase year-over-year, respectively.
