Maui Bus utilizes alternate routes in South Maui following flooding
By Wendy Osher
Maui Bus Service to South Maui resumes today utilizing alternate routes to avoid areas affected by yesterday’s heavy rains and flooding.
The limited access along South Kihei Road will result in modifications to the Kihei Islander route. South Maui was the only area where bus service was affected by yesterday’s weather.
The Kihei Islander, began today at 7:30 a.m. It will take riders from Kaahumanu Shopping Center to Maalaea. From there the bus usually takes South Kihei Road, but will instead use the Piilani Highway to bypass flooded areas. Drivers will then access S. Kihei Road via Piikea Avenue, and will be able to service those areas of Kihei on the way to Wailea.
Transportation officials say they will notify the public as soon as they can resume their regular Kihei route.
As of this morning, the only road advisory that remained in effect was for South Kihei Road.
Both North and South bound lanes are closed in the following areas at last report: Between the area South of Nohokai (fronting Longs) and Kauhaa St.; Between the area of Namauu St and Kulani Hakoi St.; Between the area of Kaonoulu St and Wailana St (fronting Maui Lu Resort)… access to the Maui Lu Resort and for area residents will be through Kenolio Rd just South of South Pointe.; The North bound lane will be open between the Kihei Bay Vista and Kauhale Makai Condos on South Kihei Rd.
