Officials with the County of Maui re-opened South Kihei Road shortly after 7 p.m. (Sat. Jan. 15, 2011) after three full days of storm cleanup. The road was closed early Thursday morning when heavy rains flooded the area and sent debris and runoff onto South Kihei Road and surrounding neighborhoods.
Cleanup today focused on the stretch of road between the old Suda Store and the Azeka Shopping Center.
Although S. Kihei Rd. is now open, cleanup crews plan to return throughout the week to continue remnant mud and debris removal.
Workers cleared and repaired Hauoli Street in Maalaea where the road had collapsed during the initial storm cleanup efforts. Although Hauoli St. is open to foot and vehicle traffic, the roadway remains damaged and weak. Public Works officials have placed a weight restriction on the road of no more than 10,000 lbs, to prevent failure of the steel plates that now cover the road damage.
Baldwin Beach Park in Paia will remain closed until Tuesday due to flooding caused by the recent storm.
