The Maui Police Department undergoes its fifth re-accreditation assessment this month. The process takes place every three years to ensure that the department maintains compliance with state-of-the-art standards established by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc.
The Maui Police Department first achieved accreditation status 15 years ago on August 3, 1996. Accreditation provides nationwide recognition that the department’s managerial and operational policies and procedures are in accord with professional standards set forth by the CALEA team.
Overseeing the Department’s Accreditation program is Maui Police Lieutenant Bradley P. Rezentes. He said, in addition to station inspections, the process includes an assessment of the department’s written documents, personnel interviews, and site visits to offices and other areas where standards of compliance can be observed.
Maui Police Chief Gary Yabuta said the team will also examine the Department’s policies, procedures, management, operations and support services.
CALEA assessors will conduct the review between April 30 to May 4, 2011. As part of the review, the public and department employees are invited to offer comments on the service and performance of the department to assessors. Phone calls are limited to 10 minutes, must address compliance standards, and will not be recorded.
