Pedestrian Killed in Honoapiilani Hwy Accident on Maui

A 55-year-old man suffered fatal injuries while crossing the Honoapiilani Highway on foot Monday night. The unidentified pedestrian had no local address and was crossing the highway (from east to west) in an unlit area, when he was struck by a vehicle headed South on the Honoapiilani Highway.

The accident was reported at 7:49 p.m. Monday, April 18, 2011, along the Honoapiilani Highway near Kenui Street. According to police reports the pedestrian was not in a crosswalk at the time of the crash.

He was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center with life-threatening injuries, and later died. His identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The 54-year-old driver of the vehicle involved in the crash is a visitor from Switzerland and was not injured.

The accident is the third fatality on Maui County roads this year, compared to six at the same time last year.

Maui Police continue to investigate the incident and will be considering all factors including speed, alcohol and the sobriety of the pedestrian.
