Northshore Greenway Update Scheduled for May 17

The Nutrition and Physical Activity Coalition (NPAC) of Maui County is sponsoring a community support workshop for the Northshore Greenway Tuesday, May 17 at Kaunoa Senior Center room 103 starting at 5:30 pm.  The Northshore Greenway is a non-motorized connection between Kahului and Paia originally proposed in the early 90’s.

David Goode, the director of Public Works for Maui County, is the featured guest speaker.  He will provide a status report on efforts to complete the greenway from Sprecklesville to Baldwin Park.  The connection is proposed to start on Amala Place and end at the Youth Center at Paia Bay.

The workshop will focus on the last segment from Waipuna Place in Sprecklesville to Baldwin Beach and the creation of a community support group.

The greenway was originally proposed by Bob Kiger of Cruiser Bobs and was supported by the Mayor’s Bicycle Advisory Committee.

According to a statement issued by Dave De Leon, a member of the NPAC Board and an early supporter of the greenway, “Obesity among kids and adults have reached epidemic proportions.”  “This is the result of communities built around cars, not people.”

Stakeholders and interested community members are encouraged to attend and volunteer to participate in the greenway project.  Other NPAC inititives for healthy community design include a Complete Streets ordinance for Mau County and the new general plan that is under development.
