Making the Rounds in Wailea: Mulligan’s On The Blue
By Kristin Hashimoto
A true Irish pub on Maui might be slightly less hard to find than that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. That’s why Mulligan’s On The Blue is a much-needed Irish injection into Maui’s plethora of pina-coladas, mai-tai’s and margaritas.
Take a look at the drink menu and check out the whiskey and whisky selection. A single letter difference in spelling is of national importance. Whiskeys spelled with an “e” hail from America and Ireland, while whiskys with no “e” are made in Japan, Canada, and Scotland. Mulligans carries twelve different whiskeys and whiskys, from Oban and Glenlivet, to Jameson and Lagavulin. Their most expensive by the glass whiskey is the Jameson aged for 18 years at $16. Other whiskeys range in price-point from $7.50 and up.
Want a pint of something on tap? Arguably, when one goes to a pub, one must have a pint (or more) of this hearty stout. Guinness is simply dinner in a cup. Thick mouth feel, nearly obsidian in color with a creamy head. For $5 a glass, patrons can choose from Guinness, Harp, Smithwicks, and Bass. Other offerings include, tastes from the Big Island and Maui from the Maui Brewing Company and Big Island’s Kona Brewing Company.
Not in the mood for beer or whiskey? Try a martini or other mixed drink. Have some happy hours with $6 appetizers and drink specials from 3:00-6:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. until closing. Each night, there’s live music. Willie K., Gail Swanson, and the Celtic Tigers are regular performers here. There’s no excuse to having another boring night and weekend.
