The Liko A’e Native Hawaiian Scholarship Program is the recipient of a $100,000 grant from the Office of Hawaiian Affairs (OHA).  The funding will go towards scholarships in higher education for non-traditional Native Hawaiian students.

Program Director Malia Davidson said the funds will enable the disbursal of 40 to 50 additional scholarships this year.

“Funds are tight for many families and we are grateful that OHA has recognized the need in our communities,” said Davidson.

The Liko A’e Native Hawaiian Scholarship Program is based at the University of Hawai’i Maui College with satellite centers across the state.  Since its inception in 2003, the program has funded education for thousands of Native Hawaiian students seeking associate and professional degrees.

Scholars also support organizations or individuals needing assistance as a community service requirement. Last year, more than 5,000 hours of service was performed.

The new application period runs from June 1-30, 2011.
