Maui Has a Community Band? Yes!
By Kristin Hashimoto
Would you expect a full band in concert at Queen Kaahumanu Mall? On June 30th, the Maui Community Band, (yes, Maui does have a community band), will be performing a multitude of pieces from 7:00 p.m.
Band Director, Lisa Owen, will be leading her instrumentalists in patriotic tunes, classical compositions and original works. This free concert will take place at center stage. This will be a preview for the band’s Fourth of July concert, taking place on the lawn of the Lahaina Library, right before the fireworks show.
The band was founded in 2003 by Owen, and has grown to include a diversity of musicians ranging in age from 12 to 74 years of age. Of the band’s 50 members, half are students from local intermediate and high schools. The remaining band members are community musicians with a love of music and mentoring. Oftentimes, older band members serve as teacher and friend to younger players.
