Maui Traffic Advisories: Maalaea, Waiehu, Haleakala

There are several road advisories in effect for the island of Maui over the next few days associated with a bicycle race at Haleakala, an ongoing construction project at Maalaea, and road work in Waiehu.
Maui’s Cycle to the Sun Race: August 20
The annual “Cycle to the Sun” bicycle race takes place on Saturday, August 20, 2011. Motorists traveling between Paia and the summit of Haleakala are urged to use extra caution during the race, which begins at 6:30 a.m. The 36 mile race is organized by Maui Cyclery and will benefit Pa’ia Youth Center, includes about 200 participants who will test their endurance as they ascend the 10,000 foot summit.
The riders will pedal up Baldwin Avenue to Makawao, then up Olinda Road to Hanamu Road. From there, the ride traverses the switchbacks of the Haleakala Highway and Crater Road, and travels through Haleakala National Park, ending at the Sliding Sands trailhead at 10,000 feet elevation.
Maalaea Water Treatment Facility Construction: Thru End of Nov. 2011
The state Department of Transportation continues work at Maalaea Harbor to install water and sewer lines, and a water treatment facility. Due to ongoing construction, Maalaea Boat Harbor Road is closed around-the-clock, from the south Honoapiilani Highway entrance to Hauoli Road. Construction hours are Mondays through Fridays from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., excluding holidays. Construction is slated to continue through the end of November, 2011. Directional signs are posted on the Honoapiilani Highway to notify motorists of alternate routes.
Waiehu Beach Road Pavement Maintenance: August 20-26
Crews continue daily pavement maintenance work on Waiehu Beach Road. Intermittent alternating single lane closures are in effect on Waiehu Beach Road in both directions from the Kahekili Highway to Kahului Beach Road. The closures are in effect on Monday, August 22, through Friday, August 26, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily.
