Tree Hazard Forces Temporary Closure of Maui’s Baldwin Park

Baldwin Park on Maui will be closed beginning  Wednesday, August 24, 2011, due to tree hazards caused by erosion.

Park officials have identified two trees as having had their base weakened by beach erosion, according to Rod Antone, County of Maui Communications Director.

The trees include a coconut and ironwood tree, both located on the right side of the park.  County officials say exposed roots pose an injury hazard to beachgoers who could trip and fall.

County officials said the same beach erosion damaged park facilities, forcing the closure earlier this week of the restrooms and shower area at Baldwin Park.

As a precaution, the Maui County Department of Parks has decided to temporarily close the facility.  Authorities say the park will be reopened after the situation can be resolved and public safety restored.
