Moniz Sparks UH Rout of UC Davis

The University of Hawaii football team took out its frustration over suffering a stunning 40-20 football loss at UNLV the previous week by routing UC Davis 56-14 at Aloha Stadium on Saturday night. 
Leading UH was senior quarterback Bryant Moniz, who tied an NCAA record by throwing for seven touchdowns in a single half. Moniz distributed his scoring tosses to five different receivers, with three of those going to senior receiver Royce Pollard, who finished with nine grabs for 145 yards.
Five of his scoring tosses were of 20 yards or longer as Moniz completed 30 of 40 passes for 424 yards. The yardage figure also was a school record for one half, a mark originally set by current UH offensive coordinator Nick Rolovich. Moniz also gained 50 yards on five carries.
With UH leading 49-0 at intermission, Moniz did not play in the second half. Shane Austin, David Graves and Cayman Shutter also saw action at QB for Hawaii.
On Monday, he was named Western Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season.
Hawaii will take a 2-2 mark into Saturday’s WAC opener at LaTech, which is coming off a 26-20 OT road loss to Mississippi State of the powerful SEC.
Making the loss to UNLV even more galling in retrospect for UH fans was that the Runnin’ Rebels then lost 41-16 at home to Southern Utah, a team from the second-tier FCS, during the past weekend. Hawaii was a 20.5-point favorite over UNLV.
VOLLEYBALL: At one point, there was serious discussion about whether to red-shirt freshman Kalei Adolpho. On Saturday, Adolpho validated the decision of coach Dave Shoji to keep the Molokai High product on the active roster.
Forced into duty in the second set when third-team All-American middle blocker Brittany Hewitt suffered from back spasms and illness, Adolpho responded in a big way.
She registered eight blocks and went 7-for-8 on her kill attempts, boosting to the 11th-ranked Rainbow Wahine to a four-set road victory over Utah State.
The 21-25, 25-16, 25-15, 25-20 win improved Hawaii’s records to 12-1 overall and 2-0 in the WAC.
Next for UH are home matches at the Stan Sheriff Center on Thursday versus Nevada and Saturday against Fresno State.
