[flashvideo file=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1eI6rdOVOxo /] Coming off of a narrow opening game loss, the Hoyas came back to defeat host Chaminade today in Day 2 of the EA SPORTS Maui Invitational basketball tournament.
Georgetown defeated the Silverswords, 86 to 61, with senior guard, Jason Clark putting away 28 points, 5 rebounds and 1 assist.
“It’s always tough to have a late game and turn around and play early in the morning,” said Clark.
Georgetown came off of an intense game last night, losing its opening day match-up against Kansas by just four points, 67-63.
Now in the consolation bracket, the Hoyas had to refocus their energy. “I think we settled down a little bit and now we got to move on,” said Coach John Thompson.
“You only have a finite number of games and every game is special. You can’t dwell on–you can’t neglect or not appreciate and love the one you’re about to play… because you’re thinking about those that you’ve already played or those that you play in the future,” said Thompson.
“Some guys are tired, some guys are hurting; but I think that’s something that we just got to play through,” said Clark.
Chaminade managed to put away a total of 61 points, 18 of them by junior guard, Waly Coulibaly, who also led the Silverswords with 3 rebounds and 1 steal.
“I think we did a decent job playing this game,” said Coulibaly. “We got some people that are freshmen and they don’t have a lot of experience, so it’s going to be better for them to get to do what they have to do.”
Silversword coach Eric Bovaird said the tournament is an incredible opportunity to see where the team’s weaknesses are. “I think every division two team wished they had the opportunity to do this,” said Bovaird.
“We’re going to analyze the teams really closely, and it’s going to make us a lot better team,” he said.
Georgetown advances to play for fifth place against Memphis in Game 10 at noon on ESPN2. Chaminade plays in Game 9 for seventh place against Tennessee at 9:30 a.m. on ESPNU.
All games are being carried live on local broadcasts of ESPN 550 AM and at espn550.com.
