The Westin Maui Resort & Spa along with The Westin Ka’anapali Ocean Resort Villas are taking active steps to promote a safe working environment.

Management and staff at the Maui properties, along with select contract vendors, completed a general industry certification course on standard compliance issues.

Managed by Starwood Hotels & Resorts, the Westin properties are the first on Maui and in the state to push for and participate in the 30-hour OSHA certification program, according to company officials.

OHSA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) is the main federal agency charged with enforcement of workforce safety and health issues in the nation.

The training was coordinated by Sidney Nakamura, Complex Director of Security and Risk Management for Westin Maui and Westin Villas in Ka’anapali.

The course was run by SeaRay Beltran of Pacific Islands Risk Management (PIRM) Group International, the only private consulting and training company that has an authorized OSHA Training Institute Instructor on Maui.

“Our partnership with PIRM Group International further reinforces our commitment towards building a culture of safety, providing the safest and most enjoyable environment for our resort guests, owners and associates (staff),” said Nakamura.

Both Westin resorts in Maui have also embraced Starwood’s “Be Safe” corporate program aimed at implementing safety compliance in the various departments at the resorts. “Our pro-active approach has resulted in reduction of accidents and costs involved,” said Nakamura.
