The House Tourism committee holds a public hearing today on a bill that would allow a 20-year license for a stand-alone casino in Waikiki.

The measure also seeks the creation of a Hawaii Gaming Control Commission, and would impose a 15% wagering tax on the casino’s gross receipts.

House Bill 2788 was introduced by Rep. Joe Souki of Maui.

Fellow Rep. Tom Brower, who is the House Tourism Chair said for him, gambling could be a new industry for Hawaii to increase tax revenue and lessen future tax increases on residents.

“Other world cities show that if gambling is done right, residents benefit; if done wrong, some may suffer,” said Rep. Brower.

The hearing is scheduled for 9:15 a.m. at the State Capitol.
