By Wendy Osher
A Maui student is among the four who will represent Hawaii at the National MATHCOUNTS Competition in Orlando, Florida in May.
Jesse Doan of Seabury Hall joins teammates David Chang and Jion Kato of Washington Middle School, and Mark Klein of Punahou School in representing the state. The team will be led by Washington Middle School math coach Mr. Sung Park, whose team captured first place at the Oahu Chapter and Hawaii State competitions.
The four students were the top contenders at the 29th Annual State MATHCOUNTS Competition held over the weekend.
MATHCOUNTS is a national enrichment, coaching and competition program that promotes middle school mathematics achievement. The program also promotes careers in math, science, technology and engineering.
Students compete in a series of rounds designed to challenge their math skills, improve problem-solving abilities and sharpen logical thinking and analytic skills.
The program in Hawaii is organized by the Hawaii Society of Professional Engineers and supported by Hawaiian Electric Company.
