DLNR Teacher Institute Offered on Maui

The state Department of Land and Natural Resources will offer a new program for pre-service and in-service teachers on Maui in June.

The teacher institute program, run by the department’s Division of Forestry and Wildlife, is intended for teachers and educators of grades K through 6.

“The DOFAW Teacher’s Institutes will supply teachers with the tools and connections they need to develop successful experiential education units that tie together, science, culture, and standards-based learning,” said DLNR Chairperson William J. Aila, Jr.

Participants will be certified in Project Learning Tree, Aloha ‘Āina, and Navigating Change curriculum, and will be exposed to lesson plans from ‘Ohi‘a Project and Hō‘ike O Haleakalā.

The sessions also feature opportunities to hike, explore, and engage with scientists and cultural practitioners, including outings at Haleakalā National Park.

The Maui teacher institute session runs from June 21 to 24 and costs $75.  Space is limited to 15 people.  There is also a session planned on Oahu from June 5-8.

The Division of Forest and Wildlife will be accepting applications through April 30.
