No Tsunami Threat to Hawaii, 6.5 Mexico Earthquake

The USGS has since downgraded the magnitude of the Michoacan, Mexcio earthquake from a 7.0 preliminary magnitude, to a 6.5 earthquake.

There is no tsunami threat to Hawaii following a 7.0 magnitude earthquake in the Michoacan region of Mexico. The earthquake was one of three 5+ magnitude tremors reported within a 15 minute time frame along the West Coast of North America.

MEXICO: The Mexico quake was reported at 12:55 p.m. HST on Wednesday, April 11, 2012.

The location of the earthquake with respect to nearby cities was: 32 miles SW of La Mira, Michoacán, Mexico; 38 miles NW of Las Guacamayas, Michoacán, Mexico; 40 miles NW of La Orilla, Michoacán, Mexico; 81 miles SSW of Uruapan, Michoacán, Mexico; and 209 miles WNW of Acapulco, Guerrero, Mexico.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, issued information saying that based on all available data, a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected, and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii.

There were also two sizable earthquakes, measured at greater than 5 in magnitude, reported along the west coast of the mainland United States within the past hour.

NORTHERN CALIFORNIA: A 5.3 magnitude quake was recorded off the shore of Northern California.  The quake was reported at 12:42 p.m. on Wednesday, April 11, 2012.  The Northern California quake was measured at a depth of 7 km and was located 14 miles WNW of Mendocino, CA; 15 miles WSW of Fort Bragg, CA; 19 miles NW of Navarro Head, CA; and 141 miles NW of San Francisco City Hall, CA.

COAST OF OREGON: Another West Coast quake was measured at 5.9 preliminary magnitude off the coast of Oregon at 12:41 p.m. on Wednesday, April 11, 2012 at a depth of 10 km.  The earthquake was located 161 miles WNW of Bandon, OR; 164 miles W of Barview, OR; 165 miles WNW of Port Orford, OR; 213 miles NW of Crescent City, CA; and 276 miles WSW of Portland, OR.

The quakes also come after a large 8.2 magnitude earthquake reported overnight off the west coast of Northern Sumatra in Indonesia. The 8+ magnitude tremor was reported at 12:43 a.m. on Wednesday, April 11, 2012, and was located 659 miles WSW of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

There was also a 5.5 magnitude earthquake reported overnight near the Aleutian Islands region. That quake was reported at 11 p.m. HST on Tuesday, April 10, 2012. The Aleutian quake was located 29 miles SSE of Adak, AK, and 1203 miles WSW of Anchorage, AK.
