UHMC Writing Project 2012 Begins In June

Maui educators have an opportunity to learn new motivational writing practices and strategies for their students at the annual 2012 Hawai’i Writing Project Invitational Summer Institute at University of Hawai’i Maui College.

The Hawai’i Writing Project is an affiliate of the National Writing Project. The institute focuses on the importance of writing and critical thinking in a rounded 21st century education, and on how to successfully introduce useful writing strategies to students.

Teachers who complete the program become teacher consultants, who serve as literacy leaders and motivators in their communities.

The Hawai’i Writing Project, Maui promotes that teaching students essential writing skills equips them with not just literacy, but with other skills like problem solving, communication, and comprehension.

Guest presenters in previous years include experienced local writers Paul Wood and Rebecca Walker. Walker will also appear in this year’s guest presenter lineup.

The project takes place this year from June 25 – July 13, and is open to educators of all grades. Registration applications must be received by May 15. Full tuition scholarships are available for all Hawai’i Writing Project Invitational Summer Institute participants.

Teachers can earn six graduate credits in the Department of Education for $100-150 with completion of the institute and a classroom inquiry project.

For Department of Education credits, teachers must register for the institute at the Department of Education’s website and complete a classroom inquiry project.
