Baldwin Leads Best MIL Track and Field Season
By Rodney S. Yap
As a league, the Maui Interscholastic League, is enjoying its best track and field seasons in more than half a century of state competition.
The MIL is talented in both the boys and girls divisions and both the track and field events.
Proof of the league’s quality and depth came at Saturday’s MIL track and field championship finals, where the Baldwin high school boys and girls won their respective division championships, having survived the challenge from the rest of the MIL at the Satoki Yamamoto Track & Field Facility.
“People don’t realize that track and field is alive and well on Maui,” said Baldwin boys coach Gary Sanches. “There is some good talent this year. Hats off to the kids, it’s crazy, but the competition makes our league that much better.”
Baldwin finished with 175 points in the boys division and 168 points in the girls division. King Kekaulike was runner-up in the boys with 98 points, while Seabury Hall pushed the Lady Bears with 140 points.
In two weeks, Baldwin will challenge the rest of the state on the Big Island at the 54th annual Hawaii High School State Track and Field Championships. Baldwin will be among the favorites to win the boys and girls team titles.
“We had three guys throw over 50 feet in the (boys) shot put. I can’t think of any other league that has had three guys throw over 50 feet. It’s amazing, I have never seen anything like it,” Sanches said. “Everybody rose to the occasion.”
Leading the way for the Lady Bears was Kristine Felix, winner of four individual events and the only 40-point performer in either division. Felix won the 100 (12.51 seconds) and 200 (26.51) as expected. She also won the pole vault in 11 feet, 3 inches and defeated teammate Amber Kozaki in the long jump by one inch, 17-4.75 to 17-3.75.
On the boys side, Baldwin’s Keelan Ewaliko led the charge. The junior, who knows his way around the football field having been named MIL Offensive Player of the Year the last two years, continues to impress everyone in his first year competing in track and field. Ewaliko best his own prelims mark of 21-6.5 in the long jump with a 22-1.5 in the finals. He later finished second to Seabury Hall’s Jay Braun in the 100, 11.08 to 11.16, before anchoring the boys 4×100 relay team to victory in 43.57. Ewaliko would end his night by turning the table on Braun in the 200, snatching the Spartan sprinter from behind with 20 meters to go, en route to the best time in the event all year at 22.32. Braun was second in 22.65.
Ewaliko led all performers in the boys division with 30.5 points.
Here are some of the meet’s other highlights:
* Seabury Hall’s Dakota Grossman led a Spartan sweep (1-2-3) in the 1,500 and 3,000. In between both events, the sophomore finished second to teammate Dylan Ross in the 400 (61.06 to 61.17) and second to freshman teammate Kiana Smith in the 800 (2:26.04 to 2:29.40). Grossman finished with 36 points. Smith was next with 28.5 after placing second to Grossman in the 1,500 (5:05.08) and 3,000 (11:54.08).
* Seabury Hall’s Justine Malek was third in the Spartans’ sweep of the 1,500 (5:13.88) and 3,000 (12:03.69). The fact that Seabury had three runners under 5:14.0 is unheard of in league competition.
* Lahainaluna sophomore Breea Yamat broke Baldwin’s sweep of the 100 hurdles with a second-place finish of 16.90. Baldwin’s Raeana Anguay won the event in 16.62, while teammates Tayor Dugan (16.92) and Pelemarie Buka (16.99) were third and fourth, respectively.
* Buka led Baldwin’s sweep of the girls triple jump with a 35-3.25. Amber-Lei Madriaga was second (33-10.75) and Tenisha Ruidas was third (33-4.75). Last year’s winning jump of 32-2, would have finished fifth place on Saturday — same for the long jump, where last year’s best was 16-2.
* Next to Ewaliko’s upset of Braun in the 200 and Kozaki’s shocking no-height in the girls pole vault, the meet’s biggest surprise came in the boys shot put, where Maui High’s Tau Lotulelei upset Baldwin’s Pasoni Tasini, 52-11.5 to 52-10.5. The Saber delivered the winning throw on his final attempt. Lotulelei’s previous best was 48-6. Furthermore, third-place finisher Miki Fangatua of Baldwin raised his PR to 51-2 and fourth-place finisher BJ Wilhelm-Ioane of Baldwin also PR’d at 50 feet. In comparison, the winning throw in the Interscholastic league of Honolulu was 47-9.5 and the best in the Oahu Interscholastic Association was 50-10. Last year, Tasini won the MIL in 49-5.
* Maui High’s Nicola Perez-Garreaud was a double winner in the 1,500 (4:19.52) and 3,000 (9:31.64). Perez-Garreaud trailed Baldwin’s James Pearson in the 1,500 until the 300-meter mark of the final lap where he passed Pearson. Instead of drafting behind the Saber runner, Pearson worked to regain the lead over the next 200 meters and was spent when the two runners came roaring down the home stretch. Perez-Garreaud had plenty of kick left in the final 100 meters and went on to easily win the 3,000 (9:31.64) later in the meet.
* Kekaulike’s decision to concentrate on individual events instead of challenging Baldwin for the team title proved correct as Na Alii produced MIL champions in the boys triple jump with Luke Brown (44-4.75), high jump with Jansen Agapay (6-1), 400 with freshman Jake Jacobs (50.95), and 800 with Keegan Gregg (1:58.62). All four winner’s came through with season-best efforts. Kekaulike scored a whopping 48 points — almost half of its team’s total points — in the three jumping events alone. Baldwin’s 20 was the next highest.
* In the hurdles, Baldwin’s Vetekina Malafu became the MIL’s first Tongan champion, winning the 110s in 15.11. Runner-up Tyler Feiteira of Baldwin ran a half second faster than his previous best to finish second in 15.48, followed by Kamehameha Maui’s Kala’i Yap in 15.70. In the 300s, Feiteira dove at the finish line and beat Yap, 40.66 to 40.81. Feiteira now owns he state’s fastest time in the event and Yap is fourth.
* Lahainaluna distance runner Corban Kaikkonen has steadily improved and is now among the state’s best having finished second in the 3,000 (9:37.17) and third in the 1,500. Kaikkonen’s third-place time of 4:26.48 was nearly 10 seconds faster than his previous best.
