A Hāna man was fatally injured in a single-vehicle collision in East Maui on Sunday morning.
Authorities have since identified the man as John Boyd Krause, 19, of Hāna, Maui.
The accident was reported at 5:38 a.m. on Sunday, June 3, along the highway just south of Kakio Road in the Hāna district near Hāmoa.
According to police reports, Krause was driving a 1992 Toyota pickup truck south-bound towards Kaupo, when the vehicle traveled right off the shoulder of the roadway, collided with a utility pole, and overturned before coming to rest.
A 20-year-old male passenger, also of Hāna, was transported via Medevac to the Maui Memorial Medical Center where he was treated and released for head and leg injuries, authorities said.
Maui police say speed and alcohol are suspected in the crash. Police reports indicate that both the operator and passenger were not wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.
The incident is Maui County’s 14th traffic fatality in 2012 compared to five at the same time last year.
