Lahainaluna Rolls Over King Keakaulike, 29-0
By Rodney S. Yap
Lahainaluna High School quarterback Kiko Fonohema scored touchdown runs of 1 and 8 yards, respectively, to lead the Lunas to a 29-0 rout of King Kekaulike at War Memorial Stadium on Saturday.
The game was the 2012 Maui Interscholastic League opener for both teams. Lahainaluna improved its overall record to 2-0, while Kekaulike dropped to 0-2.
A crowd of about 2,200 watched the Lunas’ offense attack Kekaulike’s defense with eight different running backs.
Meanwhile, Lahainaluna’s defense, minus Hercules Mataafa, who attended the game but did not suit up, contained Kekaulike’s young spread offense led by sophomore quarterback Ryley Widell. Na Alii managed fewer than 100 yards in total offense, more than half of which came late in the game against the Lunas’ reserves.
Kekaulike did not get its second first down until just over seven minutes in the third quarter on a 17-yard run by tailback Jay Braun, a junior transfer from Seabury Hall. The play was the longest gain from scrimmage for Na Alii. Widell was sacked seven times for a loss of 49 yards.
Fonohema rushed 13 times for 23 yards and was 2-for-6 passing for 45 yards, both completions going to senior tight end Asi Fatongia. Tytus Lucas led all rushers with 81 yards on 11 carries. Lucas also scored on a 6-yard run in the third quarter.
Christian Whitehead opened the scoring for the Lunas with 8 minutes, 30 seconds to play in the first quarter. Whitehead set-up his two-yard touchdown run with runs of 22 and 2, respectively, on the scoring drive.
