Maui Film “Get a Job” Showing at `Iao Theater

Locally filmed, written, and filled with an entirely local cast, you can’t get any more local than this movie. Filmed mainly in central Maui, “Get a Job” is a comedy about – what else – finding a job.

Baldwin High School graduate Brian Kohne wrote and directed the movie while Maui resident Stefan Schaefer produced.

This hysterically funny independent film is full of the island’s finest including Willie K, Eric Gilliom, Augie T, Jake Shimabukuro, Carolyn Omine, Kathy Collins, Henry Kapono, Amy Hanaiali’i, Mick Fleetwood and many others.

With influences like Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, The Marks Brothers and Dean Martin, Kohne wanted his movie to be full of laughs. With several awards including “Best Comedy” by The Ventura Film Festival in 2011, and “Audience Choice” at the Big Island Film Festival also in 2011, he seems to have just accomplished that goal.

Without giving away too much of the satirical comedy’s storyline, it is based on an employment agent, William (played by Willie K), and his tiring journey of finding a steady job for the care-free, life-loving local Merton (played by Eric Gilliom). Of course there are twists and turns along the way but the laughs are consistent.

What shocks many of the viewers is how great the quality of the movie really is. Let’s face it — Maui isn’t exactly equipped with Hollywood’s finest tools and equipment. But with a strong eye, great cast and a scenery like ours, how could you go wrong? Only being able to work with a $20,000 budget was a bit of a struggle as well, but as Kohne mentioned in a recent KNUI interview with The Breakfast Club’s Tom and Kelly, “It was a labor of love.”

That labor of love took four years to complete, and Kohne says since he’s his toughest critic and that he still continues to make changes to the film daily. Some people were fortunate enough to already see this comedy, however here’s your second chance to either see the hilarious film for the first time or go again and enjoy the same belly roll for a second time. Tickets are $10 each at the `Iao Theater. Opening weekend starts Friday through Sunday, Aug. 31^st through Sept. 2nd.

Friday, Sept. 7: 1 p.m; 3 p.m.; 5 p.m.; 7 p.m.; and a 9 p.m screening for First Friday.

Saturday, Sept. 8: 1 p.m.; 3 p.m.; 5 p.m.; 7 p.m.

The box office will open a half an hour before the day’s first screening time. You will not be able to buy tickets in advance so it is recommended that everyone come early, especially on the evening showings.
