Rescue crews from the Maui Fire Department responded to Hoolawa Bay in Haiku for reports of an unresponsive male.
According to Maui Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga, crews from Air-1 with Rescue-10 personnel were dispatched to the scene at around 2:14 p.m. on Monday, October 8, 2012.
According to Mainaga, the victim was airlifted to a landing zone provided by Engine-2 at the end of Honopou Road.
Medic 2 from Makawao was also dispatched to the scene for reports of an unresponsive snorkeler found in the water, said Maui County Paramedics Association spokesperson Ryan Joslin.
When Medics arrived on scene at 2:37 p.m., they were informed that the male was brought to shore by a female snorkeler, said Joslin.
According to Joslin, Air-1 transported the patient up to awaiting medics where resuscitation attempts were not initiated because of the condition of the body. The victim, authorities say, was pronounced dead on scene.
It is not known if the male was a resident or visitor.
The Maui Police Department is conducting an investigation. Further details are pending release.
