New Photovoltaic System Installed at Kahului Elementary

The Sun Power for Schools solar education program celebrated a newly installed photovoltaic system at Kahului School this week.

Sun Power for Schools is a voluntary partnership between Maui Electric Company, Maui County’s public schools, and the community.

The project seeks to encourage renewable energy education for Hawaii’s school children by installing solar electric systems in selected schools using photovoltaic technology.

SPS promotes alternatives to conventional fuels for the production of electricity and helps the schools reduce their electric consumption and peak electric demands from MECO’s system.

Completion of the Kahului Elementary School installation brings the total Sun Power projects in Maui County to 12.

Schools with SPS photovoltaic systems include: Baldwin High School, Molokai High School, Molokai Middle School, Lanai High and Elementary School, Kalama Intermediate School, and Maui High School.

PV lighting systems have also been installed at Iao Intermediate, Lahainaluna High School, Lokelani Intermediate, and Maui Waena Intermediate.
