US Senate Appointment to be Announced at 2 p.m.

Governor Neil Abercrombie this afternoon will announce his selection for the appointment to fill the US Senate seat left vacant by the passing of Sen. Daniel K. Inouye.
The announcement will be made at 2 p.m. at the Governor’s Executive Office, Ceremonial Room.

According to Hawaii News Now, the Hawaii Democratic Party’s state central committee Wednesday selected three finalists including: US Rep. Colleen Hanabusa, Hawaii Land and Natural Resources Deputy Director Esther Kiaaina and Lt. Gov. Brian Schatz.
The news outlet reports that there were a total of 14 applicants that sought consideration for the post including: former US Rep. Ed Case; State Sen. Will Espero; US Represenative-elect Tulsi Gabbard; Honolulu attorney Tony Gill; Maui resident Antonio Gimbernat; US Rep. Colleen Hanabusa; Honolulu attorney Timothy Hogan; DLNR Deputy Director Esther Kiaaina; State Sen. Donna Mercado Kim; Kurt Lajala; Blake Oshiro, the governor’s deputy chief of staff; Lt. Gov. Brian Schatz; David Tarnas; and Earl Winfree.
US Sen. Inouye died on Dec. 17 at age 88 following respiratory complications.
