Recovering Meth Addict Shares Story With Maui Students

Students at Maui Preparatory Academy heard from a recovering meth addict on Monday who shared his story about the dangers of the drug during an all-school assembly.

The presentation before 150 students, was the first in a series of awareness assemblies planned on Maui this year by the non-profit Hawaii Meth Project.

The presentations are aimed at educating the community and teens about the dangers and devastating effects of crystal methamphetamine, or “ice.”

Recovering meth addict and devoted volunteer of the Hawaii Meth Project, William Wandall, shared his story and experiences with meth during the presentation. The assembly was hosted by Colby Takeda, program manager of the Hawaii Meth Project; and Hawaii Meth Project Teen Advisory Council Member Aja Toscano and senior at Lahainaluna HS.

The Hawaii Meth Project launched a hard-hitting, integrated advertising and media campaign in June of 2009,  aimed at reducing methamphetamine use in the state.

The Hawaii Meth Project is affiliated with the national non-profit Meth Project organization, headquartered in California. Both groups aim to significantly reduce first-time meth use through public service messaging, public policy, and community outreach.
