VIDEO: Shelter Opens in Pukalani Following Flooding, Heavy Rain

Volunteers from the American Red Cross on Maui plan to open a shelter tonight at the Hannibal Tavares Community Center for Maui residents displaced by floods and heavy rains.

The shelter will open up at 8:15 p.m. for those who had to leave their homes due to flooding, and to motorists who could not make it home due to the closed roads.

County officials advise motorists to drive safely.

The flash flood warning for Maui remains in effect until 9 p.m., but may be extended beyond that time if heavy rains persist.

Some roads in Maui County remained closed into the evening hours due to flooding or impassable conditions.

MAUI ROAD UPDATES: 9:21 p.m., February 21, 2013:

• Kealaloa Ave in Makawao CLOSED between Hanamu Road and Haleakala 377 due to flooding and debris on roadway.
• Kee Road in Makawao REMAINS CLOSED between Makawao Ave and Baldwin Ave due to flooding;
• Brewer Road in Makawao REMAINS CLOSED due to flooding;
• Makawao Ave is now RE-OPENED between Apana and Laie Road;
• Kaupakalua Road in Haiku has RE-OPENED.
