Maui County Unemployment Claims Drop

Maui County initial unemployment claims decreased by 44.2% last week compared to the same week one year ago, according to statistics released by the Hawaii Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism.

This week’s total unemployment claim filings in Maui County were 203 and filings during the same week in 2012 were 364.

In fact, all counties in Hawaii saw a drop in unemployment claims, except for Hawaii County which saw a 4.7% increase last week over the same week in 2012.

Statewide initial unemployment claims decreased by 25.0%, with this week’s total filings of 1,767 and filings during the same week in 2012 of 2,357.

Comparing 2013 to 2012 for the counties:

·        Oahu had 392 fewer claims filed
·        Hawaii had 13 more claims filed
·        Maui had 161 fewer claims filed
·        Kauai had 41 fewer claims filed

In percentage changes, comparing the current week to
the same week a year ago:

·        Oahu had a 25.8% decrease
·        Hawaii had a 4.7% increase
·        Maui had a 44.2% decrease
·        Kauai had a 29.9% decrease
