Three Maui men are safe after they became separated from their kayaks while venturing into waters off the coast of Sugar Beach in North Kihei on Sunday, officials said.

Officials from the Maui Fire Department say rescue personnel responded to the incident at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 7, after receiving a call indicating the kayakers were in distress.

Maui Fire Capt. Paul Haake said crews from the Coast Guard were able to locate one of the kayakers. The rescue mission ended at around 8:45 p.m. when the two other men made it to shore and contacted rescue crews patrolling the beach front, Haake said.

All men were reportedly accounted for and in good condition.

Friends tell authorities the group had gone into deeper waters to do some diving and became separated from their kayaks while trying to get back to shore.
