Fire crews on Maui were called to the Waiheʻe Ridge Trail Saturday afternoon to assist a 64-year-old woman who injured her ankle while hiking in the area with a group of friends, officials said.

Authorities say the incident was reported at around 2:45 p.m. Saturday.

Rescue personnel found the woman on a marked trail about a mile above the trailhead and used the department’s Air 1 helicopter to transport her to awaiting paramedics, said Maui Fire Capt. Paul Haake.

Haake said the woman was a part-time Kihei resident from Canada, who was hiking with vacationing friends when she slipped and injured her ankle.

Authorities say paramedics treated the woman on scene, but she was eventually taken by friends to the emergency room at Maui Memorial Medical Center for further care.
