Water Shutdown Scheduled for Haʻikū

Water will be shut off to parts of Haʻikū for about eight hours as crews conduct waterline replacement work along Kaupakalua Road, officials said.

The Maui Department of Water Supply is reportedly conducting the work as part of a larger capital improvement project that is scheduled for completion in July 2013.

Department officials say the plans call for the replacement of an undersized line in an effort to provide sufficient fire protection to area residents.

The shut-down is scheduled to take place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, April 16, and will affect the following areas, according to a department announcement: Kaupakalua Road from Ulumalu Road to Hāna Highway, Holokai Road, Nolu Road, Burns Road, Maluaina Place, Ulumalu Road, Hoʻomaolo Place, Nuʻuanu Place, Kawelo Road, Kukuna Road, Haloa Road, Kekoanui Place, a portion of Hāna Highway near the Kaupakalua Road intersection, Pono Road, Hale Pili Way, North Holokai Place, and Kapuamilia Place.

Maui Water Department Administrative Officer, Jacky Takakura said the shut down is part of the project to replace the waterline on Kaupakalua Road from the Ulumalu Road intersection, commonly referred to as the “Five Corners”, to approximately 400 feet east of the Kawelo Road intersection.

Motorists are asked to use caution and follow traffic control measures being implemented on Kaupakalua Road near the Kawelo Road intersection.
