A visiting couple from Tuscon, Arizona were located in good health after they got lost on the Kahakapao Trail in Piʻiholo last night, officials said.

The 51-year-old man and 40-year-old woman called 911 for help at around 5:45 p.m. Monday, saying they became disoriented, according to authorities.

Maui Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga said attempts to locate the hikers by air were unsuccessful due to heavy cloud cover.

According to Mainaga, crews from Engine 5 out of Makawao initiated a ground search, located the couple at around 8:20 p.m., and safely escorted them out of the area by 8:45 p.m.

Crews from Rescue 10 out of Kahului also assisted in the search, officials said.
