Free Summer Food Service at 4 Maui Schools
By Wendy Osher
There are four locations on Maui that are participating in the Summer Food Service Program, offered in coordination with the state Department of Education.
Under the federally-funded program, children 18 years and younger are eligible for the free meals.
In order to qualify for the US Department of Agriculture program, DOT officials say a school must have 50% or more of its regularly enrolled students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunches, and some type of summer program on campus.
The service begins in early June, and will be available at nearly 60 public schools across the state.
On Maui, services are available at the following times and locations:
- Kahului Elementary School: June 3 to July 12, breakfast 7:30 to 8:15 a.m., and lunch 10:50 to 11:30 a.m. More information is available by calling (808) 873-3055.
- Lihikai Elementary School: June 3 to 27, breakfast 7:50 to 8:20 a.m., and lunch 11:20 to 11:50 a.m. More information is available by calling (808) 873-3033.
- Waiheʻe Elementary School: June 3 to July 18, breakfast 7 to 7:40 a.m., and lunch 10:45 to 11 a.m. More information is available by calling: (808) 984-5644.

DOT officials advise that meals will be served at the select locations Monday through Friday, except June 10, 11, 28 and July 4.
“It’s our honor and privilege to continue serving families during the summer with nutritious meals that meet federal guidelines,” saidRay L’Heureux, assistant superintendent for school facilities and support services in a press release issued today.
