Hiker Airlifted From Area off of Hāna Highway

A hiker was airlifted to safety after falling and fracturing his ankle in an area off of the Hāna Highway near Mile Marker 7, officials said.

The incident was reported at 1:57 p.m. on Sunday, June 16, 2013, about 2 miles below the highway, according to officials.

The 32-year-old male resident was located and airlifted to a landing zone in pasture on the mauka side of the the highway, said Maui Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga.

According to FS Chief Mainaga, the man suffered a fractured right ankle, and injuries to his left ankle.

He was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center for treatment of non-life threatening injuries, officials said.
