Weekend Filled With Events for Kids
By Vanessa Wolf
It’s the last weekend of July and this one is packed with things to do with your now-maybe-growing-a-little-bored-and-restless summer vacationing kids.
Best Reason to Battle for Parking at Azeka
It’s Kihei Fourth Friday tonight at Azeka Mauka and the theme is “Red, White and Blues.”
Enjoy entertainment by Maui Blues & Co. at 6 p.m. and the Bobby Ingram Blue Band at 7:30 p.m.
There will also be food, art, crafts, shopping and the Keiki/Youth Zone, with games, activities, bubbles, balloons, and face painting.
Apparently there will also be a mechanical bull for your riding pleasure. Yee ha.
Best Way to Put a Smile on a Kid’s Face
This Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Sesame Street Live: “Can’t Stop Singing” performs in the Castle Theater at the MACC.
The plot?
Well, er… it’s no Shakespeare.
“When Elmo gets his furry fingers on Abby Cadabby’s magic wand, there’s something in the air —Sesame Street becomes a nonstop, all-singing, all-dancing musical montage. Baby Bear and Grover sing their highs and lows, Cookie Monster sings fast and slow, Bert and Ernie converse in song and Murray makes mouth music for all to sing along. Learn why it feels good to sing a song, but why it feels good to stop, too. What will Elmo learn about the power of musical magic? Join the conga line of fun to find out.”
Good news: sounds like they’re going to teach your keiki the joy of singing AND ceasing to sing.
You can catch performances Friday night at 7 p.m., Saturday at 10:30 a.m., 2 and 5:30 p.m. and Sunday at 1 and 4 p.m.
Tickets are $10, $20, $33, $48 and $75.
Best Way to Put a Smile on Someone Slightly Older’s Face
It’s time again for Augie T’s “Summer of LOL” comedy show.
Tonight at the MACC in the McCoy Studio Theater, Hawaii’s popular comedian and on-air personality Augie T will be bringing his local humor – and a secret guest – for a night of comedy fun.
The show starts at 7:30 p.m.
Tickets are $20 or $35 for premium seats with a meet-and-greet.
Best Reason to Get Up Early and Head to Kahului
Warrior Elite All-stars, Maui’s 2013 national all-star cheerleading champs will be hosting a summer bazaar tomorrow morning from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Lihikai Elementary school in Kahului.
This non-profit cheer team is raising money to take their three teams to the American showcase in Anaheim, CA for a national cheerleading competition on April 11-13, 2014.
You can expect food, fun games, jumping castles, craft vendor booths, a rummage sale, silent auction, free music entertainment and performances by the Warrior Elite cheerleaders.
Best Reason to Maybe Stay Out of the Water
The Kahekili Herbivore Fisheries Management Area’s 4th Birthday Bash and Ridge to Reef Celebration will be held this Sunday, July 28 at Kahekili Beach Park from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Unfortunately, it has also just come out that wastewater injected at the Lahaina facility travels underground and ends up in the ocean offshore of Kahekili Beach, contributing pollutants to nearshore waters.
That aside, the event promises food, education, keiki events, games and prizes.
Check-in is at 9 a.m. and starts with a t-shirt giveaway.
Throughout the day will be games, educational events, a culinary contest and a noon barbecue/potluck.
Events wind up at 2 p.m. with a prize drawing for a variety of items. There will be many chances to enter throughout the day but entrants must be present to win.
Best Upcountry Party
Tomorrow night at Casanova’s in Makawao, join Source Maui Core for their “Pre-Burn” Event: That 70’s (sic) Party.
In typical Casanova fashion, details are slight, but it seems DJs Kalypso SolBass and Paul Gotel Divadeva will be spinning music that allows you to “groove to the Playa 70s style” from 9 p.m. until 1:30 a.m.
Cover is $10 before 11 p.m. and $15 after that.
Only “Yu-Gi-Oh!” Duelist League Tournament Event of Which We’re Aware
Maui Mall is saying farewell to summer vacation this Sunday, July 28 from noon to 2 p.m.
The free event will include water fountain games, scavenger hunts and eating contests for kids and adults.
More than $1,000 in prizes will be given away as part of the Super Shopper Stamp Card drawing.
There will also be that “Yu-Gi-Oh!” Duelist League tournament we mentioned and free craft tables and free healthy snacks provided for kids.
