Maui Activates Emergency Operations Center, All County Facilities to Close Monday

The County of Maui activated its Emergency Operations Center at 7 a.m. on Sunday, July 28, 2013, in anticipation of Tropical Storm Flossie, which is due to reach the Hawaiian Islands on Monday morning.

Officials issued an announcement today saying all county facilities will be closed on Monday, July 29, in anticipation of the storm. This includes all county parks, offices, DMVL offices and satellite facilities. County officials say automated trash service will operate on a normal schedule.

A Tropical Storm Warning was issued for both Maui and Hawaiʻi Counties; and a Flash Flood Watch is in effect from Monday morning until late Tuesday night.

“Flossie is expected to produce 6 to 10 inches of rain which could cause life-threatening flash floods and mudslides. Large surf may also cause coastal road closures even before the storm arrives. High winds are also a concern as they may damage property and cause severe bodily injury,” said county officials in a press release.

Officials with the County of Maui, Office of the Mayor said Maui Civil Defense sirens will NOT be sounding for this storm event, as sirens are only used for tsunami and hurricanes.

County authorities are urging the public to prepare by updating emergency kits, having supplies of food, water and fuel, and by securing homes and property against heavy rains and high winds.  The US Coast Guard is also asking that boat owners check moorings and secure vessels.

“Tropical storms can cause tremendous damage to our community,” said Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa in a press release statement today. “Residents need to prepare for the high winds, heavy rains and powerful surf that this kind of storm system can bring. Use this time wisely so that we can avoid the mad last-minute rush to gas stations and grocery stores that we often see.”
