3 Kahului Residents Hospitalized in Piʻilani Head-on Collision

Three people were transported to the hospital following a head-on collision on the Piʻilani Highway on Thursday afternoon, Aug. 15, 2013, police said.
The incident was reported at 4:25 p.m., about 265 feet north of the Keonekai Road intersection.
According to police reports, the collision occurred when a blue 2007 Honda Civic traveling north on the highway, crossed left of center and collided into a blue 2005 Toyota Corolla traveling in the opposite direction.
Police say the driver of the Civic, a 64-year-old Kahului woman, and her 50-year-old female passenger from Kahului were both taken to the hospital. The passenger sustained what police described as life-threatening injuries.
The operator of the other vehicle, a 48-year-old Kahului man, was also transported to the hospital with life threatening injuries, according to police reports.
Sergeant William Hankins with the Maui Police Department’s Vehicle Homicide unit filed a report noting that all individuals involved were secured with seat belts; and that the front airbags in the Honda, and driver side airbag in the Toyota were deployed during the incident.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
