The National Weather Service has issued a ‘red flag warning’ in Maui County in effect from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today.

A combination of warm temperatures; strong winds blowing from the east at 10 to 20 mph, with 35 mph gusts; and low relative humidity as low as 40% is expected, according to an NWS forecast.

The NWS reports that affected areas are mainly leeward areas of Molokaʻi, Lānaʻi, and Maui.

According to the NWS, a red flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions can contribute to extreme fire behavior, but does not predict new fire starts.
