Mālama ‘Āina Community Recycling Event at Maui Mall

A community recycling event is scheduled to take place this Saturday, Sept. 7, 2013, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m at the Maui Mall in Kahului.

The event, hosted by Mālama Maui Nui (formerly known as the Community Work Day Program), in partnership with Whole Foods Market, is one in a series held across the county to educate residents about recycling programs and services.

Recycling agencies will be on site at the Maui Mall parking lot next to Whole Foods Market, to accept a variety of recyclable items and assist the public in the proper disposal.

Items that will be accepted for recycling during the Mālama ‘Āina event include: scrap metal, bicycles, appliances, beverage containers, cooking oil, cellular phones, household batteries, vehicle batteries, laptop batteries, printer cartridges, newspaper, cardboard, telephone books, used auto tires ($5.00 fee), magazines, plastic grocery bags, used eye glasses, hearing aids, books, reusable paint, clothing and household items.

Confidential documents will also be accepted for shredding between 8 and 11 a.m.  Access Shredding will be conducting the shredding, and disposal is limited to two banker boxes per person.

Items that will NOT be accepted during Saturday’s event are: electronic waste such as TVs, desk top computers, motor oil, and hazardous fluids.

Other event sponsors include: Maui Disposal, Hammerhead Metals Recycling, Maui Friends of the Library, The Lions Club, Aloha Recycling, Access Shredding, Minit Stop, ARC of Maui County, Savers, Intrade Corporation, Pacific Biodiesel and the County of Maui – Department of Environmental Management. Event organizers say participants are encouraged to bring a non-perishable donation for Feed My Sheep.
